OUTSIDE/INSIDE

Urban Sound and Separate Space

Concert Installation for String Orchestra and Pictures by RADIALSYSTEM V (Berlin) and the Hamburger Kunsthalle in Collaboration with the Ensemble Resonanz

AUSSEN/INNEN (OUTSIDE/INSIDE) is the first project to be staged in the frame of the newly founded »Art Lab«, which will move into the Hubertus-Wald-Forum once a year. From 24 to 30 June 2016 the »Art Lab« will turn into a place for experimentation at the interface between the visual and performing arts. Based on the Hamburger Kunsthalle’s involvement with innovative artistic approaches of various partners, the scope of activities and role of the institution museum are to be newly explored and staked out. This exploratory process will be launched with the joint production OUTSIDE/INSIDE by RADIALSYSTEM V Berlin and the Hamburger Kunsthalle in collaboration with the Ensemble Resonanz Hamburg. Under the direction of Folkert Uhde, one of the two artistic directors of RADIALSYSTEM V, the project OUTSIDE/INSIDE focuses on the positioning and anchoring of the Kunsthalle in the city. Ruptures in the external world – the urban conflict zone in the immediate environment of the museum – provide the raw material for an interdisciplinary performance featuring music, sound collages, installations and video art.

On the evenings of the performance, clips filmed in the area surrounding the Hamburger Kunsthalle this year in spring are projected onto the internal walls of the Hubertus-Wald-Forum. Musicians from the Ensemble Resonanz, first to be seen in the videos, suddenly are present in the performance space; others interact live with their visual avatars. Large-scale portraits of the musicians by the photographer Jim Rakete set a calm counterpoint of reflection, thus forming a third level. Initially, the audience is invited to adopt the entire space of the Hubertus-Wald-Forum in a similar way as it would at an exhibition. The evening then becomes more and more centred, the concentration densified. The performance ends in darkness, while the musicians position themselves around the audience. With this experimental set-up, the project ultimately raises the question of how one can come from the sensory overload of the OUTSIDE to arrive at a contemplative art experience of the INSIDE.

The project OUTSIDE/INSIDE features music by the contemporary composer Ali Askin, among others: The spectacular work »Iterations«, first performed on the construction site of the Elbphilharmonie in 2005, has been transferred / carried over / modified into a new adaption for the Hubertus-Wald-Forum. Hamburg’s historical side is / Aspects of historical Hamburg are represented by Georg Philipp Telemann und Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.

The Hubertus-Wald-Forum served as an external stage for the Thalia Theater up until 2000, and has since been used by the Hamburger Kunsthalle as a presentation area for large exhibitions. In its hybrid function between performance and exhibition space, accommodating an audience of around 200 to 400 depending on the project, it is an ideal place for the realisation of interdisciplinary artistic approaches.

The new format »Art Lab« also comprises a scholarly examination of the respective projects. OUTSIDE/INSIDE is being complemented by research in the field of audience and reception studies, in collaboration with the academics Prof. Volker Kirchberg and Dr. Andreas Heinen (Leuphana University of Lüneburg).
