Mourning

On Loss and Change

Experiences of loss, mourning and change bear an unsettling potential that is hard to describe and seems virtually to elude all representability. Whether this concerns the loss of a beloved person through separation or death, departing from ideals and visions, being deprived of one’s home and familiar surroundings—we all live through painful experiences of irreversibility. Though these experiences concern us as individuals, the way we deal with them, how we present and assess them depends on our cultural and social environment. Which images are artists currently producing in this context? And what do they tell us about our present age? The exhibition assembles artistic positions of international contemporary art  resenting works from, among others, Bas Jan Ader, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Maria Lassnig, Thomas Schütte, Gillian Wearing.

After FAIL BETTER. Moving Images (2013) and WAITING.Between Power and Possibility (2017),  it is the third exhibition of the Hamburger Kunsthalle in a series curated by Brigitte Kölle, which deals with taboo and border issues.
