BIRTHDAYS are meant to be celebrated!

Children of all ages can celebrate their birthday at the Hamburger Kunsthalle. The birthday guests explore the Hamburger Kunsthalle in a guided tour on a specific theme. Afterward, they learn an artistic technique and create their own works of art to take home with them. 

The party also includes a snack break. You are welcome to bring refreshments to the studio rooms.

COLOURFUL BIRTHDAY FOR THE LITTLE ONES
 Ages 4 to 7 years

Colour festival: Your birthday studio
Today, you and your birthday guests will immerse yourselves in the world of colours! 
First, you will explore the Hamburger Kunsthalle together and discover how artists use colour to achieve different effects. You will encounter bright, matt, vibrant and dark colours – and quickly realise that not all blues are the same, red can be very loud, and purple and yellow look particularly good together.
Then you'll head to the studio rooms, where you'll get creative yourselves: you'll make colours, mix them, experiment with different shades and materials, and create your own surprising works of art.

Have you ever rubbed a coin through paper? A Loplop was created using a very similar process. Never heard of it? Then come the Hamburger Kunsthalle! Artists use all sorts of tricks and random processes to create their works. In our “out of control” birthday party you will play tricks on your senses and develop your own ingenious ideas. What gimmicks have artists used? Find out here and try them out yourself by scratching, daubing, rubbing and slapping!

Art & Chaos: Your Experimental Birthday Party (available from 2026)

Have you ever rubbed a coin through paper? A similar process was used to create a Loplop. Never heard of it? Then head to the Hamburger Kunsthalle!
At 'Art & Chaos’, you will first explore the Hamburger Kunsthalle and discover how artists use tricks, random processes and unpredictable techniques to create their works. In the practical phase in the studio, you will experiment with different materials and random techniques yourself – scratching, splattering, rubbing and stamping to create your own surprising works of art. In the process, you will outsmart your rational mind and develop new, creative ideas.
