Art-technological examinations on Anita Rée

As a project accompanying the preparation of the exhibition Anita Rée – A Retrospective, around 70 of the artist’s works on paper as well as 26 of her paintings underwent an art-technological examination. Aimed at investigating and documenting all aspects of Anita Rée’s use of drawing and painting materials, it included the examination of special features – eg. bronze powders, or elements of collage – and it traced the development of  the artist’s techniques and materials over the course of her career.

The project was the first major contribution towards an art-technological documentation of the work of artists from the Hamburg region.

Über der Malerei im Gemälde »Frauenkopf (Geneigter Kopf)« liegt ein feiner Schimmer von Bronzepulver, gebunden in transparentem Bindemittel
Above the painting in the painting "Woman's head (tilted head)" lies a fine shimmer of bronze powder, bound in transparent binder
Das Bild »Schlucht bei Pians« signierte Rée erst mit Pinsel und hellgrauer Farbe; vermutlich nach weiterer Bearbeitung signierte sie erneut, nun mit dunkelblauer Farbe.
The picture "Gorge at Pians" was signed by Rée first with a brush and a light gray color; probably after further processing, she signed again, now with dark blue color.
Rée nutzte häufig den Pinselstiel, um den Farbauftrag zu strukturieren, wie in »Weiße Nussbäume«
Rée often used the brush handle to structure the paint, as in »White Walnut«

In the infrared shot of »Still Life with Apples«, the graphite drawing below the watercolor is visible
