Augmented Reality Application on Emil Nolde's Painting Technique

The studio exhibition »I USUALLY PRIME WITH CHALK...«. Emil Nolde's Painting Technique presents the results of an interdisciplinary research project on the expressionist Emil Nolde (1867-1956), on which the Hamburger Kunsthalle has been working together with the Seebüll Ada and Emil Nolde Foundation and the Doerner Institute of the Bavarian State Painting Collections in Munich since autumn 2018. The content of the project was to expand the art historical aspects and recent research on Emil Nolde's historical context to include the still unknown art technological perspective.

The augmented reality application of the Hamburger Kunsthalle app adds an »Iinvisible« art technological perspective to the analogue experience of the paintings. When visiting the museum on site, one can use the app to look behind the surface of 3 paintings and discover what X-rays, infrared images or the spines reveal about Nolde's painting style. In the menu, different layers can be selected for selected paintings, transforming them into an X-ray, grazing light or infrared image. A click on the points marked on the images reveals particularly interesting insights. The details or microscope images of these pixels explain concisely how Nolde worked. Linked audio commentaries and short texts enrich the view and encourage us to look at the originals in a new way. In addition, the detailed and richly illustrated publication on the research and collaborative project will be published in March under the title "One Colour Demands Another". Emil Nolde's Painting Style (Deutscher Kunstverlag, Munich).
