Art-technological Research on the Easel Painting of the Nazarenes
In the frame of the project Kunsttechnologische Forschungen zur Staffeleimalerei der Nazarener (Art-technological Research on the Easel Painting of the Nazarenes), supported by the Deutsche Forschungs Gesellschaft (DFG), paintings by representatives of this art form selected by Eva Reinkowski-Häfner are being analyzed and compared.
The main focus is on five works from the collection of the Hamburger Kunsthalle by Johann Friedrich Overbeck, one of the principal members of the movement.
The project is aimed at investigating which painting techniques the Nazarenes had employed for their easel painting. Of particular interest will be the question whether, in addition to the content-related adoption of the German medieval painting and Italian art of the Renaissance, there are any indications for an orientation on the painting methods and the materials used by the movement’s paragons of the 15th and 16th century.
Aside from her free-lance work as a conservator in Munich, Eva Reinkowski-Häfner, who oversees this project, has already conducted intensive research on wall paintings of the Nazarenes in Rome, Munich and Düsseldorf. In 2014 her dissertation »Die Entdeckung der Temperamalerei im 19. Jahrhundert« was published. Her current research project is based at the Institute of Archaeology, Heritage Sciences and Art History (IADK) at the University of Bamberg.
