Anita Rée. A Research Project

In 2017 the Department of Modern Art had focussed on conducting extensive research on the artist Anita Rée. Encompassing research in the archives of the Hamburger Kunsthalle and further archives in Germany and abroad, especially in London, Paris and Winterthur, thus yielded new insights related to Rée’s oeuvre and life, to her personal and intellectual network, her preferential themes and motifs, and her artistic development. It also generated findings regarding the classification, dating and reception of individual works. This art-historical analysis was accompanied by elaborate art-technological examinations, rendering the project fruitful on an interdisciplinary level. With some 200 works on display, visitors could experience the impressive quality and breadth of Rée’s work in the first comprehensive solo exhibition at the Kunsthalle, from 6 October 2017 to 4 February 2018. A catalogue was published in German and English to accompany the show. Moreover, for the finissage, the Hamburger Kunsthalle was able to introduce a new, richly illustrated catalogue raisonné, providing a sound basis for further research related to the artist Anita Rée.
