again and against. From the Collection of Contemporary Art

15 December 2017 to 9 December 2018

International contemporary art from the early 1960s to today is the focus of the presentation again and against, in which the Hamburger Kunsthalle arranges recent acquisitions and »old friends«, highlights and rarely exhibited works, into new constellations. The title again and against is programmatic, identifying the two basic principles behind the show: repetition and opposition. The paintings, sculptures and video works are grouped into sometimes surprising and unconventional dialogues: Sigmar Polke with Haegue Yang, Maria Lassnig with Georg Baselitz, Neo Rauch with Tony Cragg, Georg Baselitz with Mike Kelley, Vajiko Chachkhiani with Peter Doig, and so on. Comparing and contrasting these
diverse visions brings undreamt-of affinities and striking similarities to the fore, without however lessening the impact of the individual artistic  signatures. Featured artists: Georg Baselitz, Vajiko Chachkhiani, Tony Cragg, Peter Doig, David Hockney, Annika Kahrs, Mike Kelley, Maria Lassnig, Richard Long, Wolfgang Mattheuer, Olaf Metzel, Sigmar Polke, Neo Rauch, Gerhard Richter, Pia Stadtbäumer, Cy Twombly, Stephan von Huene and Haegue Yang.
