TOYEN

TOYEN is a unique figure among the strong women working at the heart of Surrealism. She is also the most important Czech artist of the 20th century. Early on, Marie Čermínová (1902-1980) adopted her professional pseudonym, deriving from the French »Citoyen« (citizen), and as a life-long crossover artist refused stereotyping, not only regarding gender roles. André Breton celebrated her for her singular oeuvre in painting and drawing, which she consistently developed between Prague and the exile in Paris. Her work is real discovery!

Exhibition organized by the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, the National Gallery in Prague and the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, Paris Musées.

The exhibition is under the patronage of the French and Czech embassies in Berlin.

Supported by: Freunde der Kunsthalle e. V., Deutsch-Tschechischer Zukunftsfonds, Hans Brökel Stiftung für Wissenschaft und Kultur,  Behörde für Kultur und Medien Hamburg

»Toyen, entirely overflown by the sea, calms explosions, fluctuations, roar and grief, the deep lust of yearning spirits with the pastosity of blind geniuses.«
(Vítĕzlav Nezval, 1928)

»What remains of the Prague celebrated in verse by Apollinaire […] that intense and unparalleled seething of ideas and hopes […] What remains of all this? There remains Toyen.«
(André Breton, 1953)

»Never satisfied, Toyen! The world through her eyes remains indefinitely perfectible«.
(Benjamin Péret, 1953)

»I am not a painter.«
(Toyen, undated, after Annie Le Brun, 2002)
