| Andy Warhol - Photography An exhibition as part of the First Photography Triennial in Hamburg 13 May - 22 August 1999 |
Photography played a major role in
shaping Andy Warhols artistic oeuvre: the Prince of Pop was photographer and model
at the same time, he often used themes taken from reportage and advertising in his work
and he chose this medium as a way of capturing travel experiences, stars and party people.
The camera was his constant companion, functioning as a sketch book, diary and means of
communication. The exhibition Andy Warhol. Photography features the large photographic series: the Photo Booth Pictures, the Polaroids (which he used to create his portraits), the Exposures taken in clubs and discos, the Stitched Photographies, as well as a selection of the 8 x 10 inches, photographs documenting his travels and encounters. For the first time Andy Warhols photographic work is being shown within a relational context. ![]() ![]() In addition to the photograph series, the exhibition also focuses on the links between photography and Warhols work in other media: his drawings, paintings and early films are all closely related to photography, and his self-portraits move between role-play and performance. The Andy
Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, New York and the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh
have kindly offered their support to this exhibition, which will be further enhanced by
works from European and American collections.More information on the german sites
