Reopening

»OPEN DOORS AND GRAND STAIRWAYS«

»What was important for me was that visitors would find themselves face to face with art as soon as they entered the museum. No more long passages. The art is meant to be present straight away. In the last years I have often observed the ways in which visitors moved through the house, where they enjoyed to spend time, which were their meeting points and byways. We were able to develop the renewal of the museum from the way that was actually used, not from any idea of representation. All have contributed to making the very best of the building and the potential within. The old substance was not done away with by our approach to modernization.«
– Hubertus Gaßner, Director form 2006 until October 2016

»Today we have a new Kunsthalle that is centered around its visitors. This is already felt in the generous lobby where everything comes together. As a result of the modernization we now have more space for art, and we are able to present it in a new light – both in terms of technology and conception. I am especially happy about the fact that we are reopening the museum exactly in keeping with the schedule announced from the outset and that we have completely implemented the extensive range of measures planned. Here greatest credit is due to all members of the staff who have time and again made possible what was seemingly impossible.«
