The artist Olafur Eliasson (born 1967 in Copenhagen) has designed something special for the ground floor of the Galerie der Gegenwart: a visual, experiential site in which adults and children aged 6 and up can engage creatively with art. The center of the room features Eliasson's interactive work The structural evolution project: a large table with Zometools – multicolored sticks of different diameters and balls that can be used to connect them. Children and adults are encouraged to let their imaginations run wild and invent with new forms. Specially adapted for the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Eliasson combines The structural evolution project with approaches from his other works, using a lattice structure to create a special kind of exhibition area along the walls of the room. Visitors large and small can display their self-made projects on these partially mirrored shelves.
Various family exhibitions will be held in the Hamburger Kinderzimmer in an effort to inspire as many new, imaginative Zometool creations as possible. The first exhibition will be devoted to the theme Fried Egg. The current exhibition on view is Red, Yellow, Blue, while Fantastic Palaces will take the stage starting in April 2012. Each of these exhibitions will come with a Map of Trails outlining the connection between the Kinderzimmer and the museum's permanent collection. The map is free of charge and available at the ticket counter for visitors who have purchased a Family Ticket. When?
