The Hamburger Kunsthalle's 12,000 square meters are home to works from 700 years of art history, encouraging viewers to look, feel, describe, question and interpret. There is a lot to discover here: masterpieces, elements of presentation and design, perspective and ways of perceiving, developmental trajectories or contexts between art and other fields including history, religion, philosophy, literature, music, science and technology.
We offer grade-appropriate programming for every area in our permanent collection and special exhibitions, all of which is designed to enrich the experience of classroom teaching with a direct encounter with originals. You can choose between 60-minute introductions, museum talks with or without a hands-on element (90 to 120 minutes) or 3-hour projects on various topics listed in the catalogue of museum talks. We can also arrange tours on individual topics, so please get in touch if you have any questions!
"See and Make-It-Yourself" is our classic program for all age groups. After looking at a painting, children interpret what they have seen in their own artworks. Under the guidance of experienced artists or art teachers, students examine modes of representation, expand their own image-making repertoire or find a new way of expressing what they have seen.
Secondary-level students – particularly those in advanced or accelerated courses – can gain a deeper knowledge of art history as a science with projects led by our artists or tours with art historians from our team of museum education specialists. This option is available for all of the topics related to the histories of images and style listed in the catalogue of museum talks. We are also acquainted with the subjects outlined by the central higher school-leaving exam (Abitur) in the northern German states.
Many of our topical discussions are led in English, French, Italian, Russian or Spanish – by native speakers well-versed in both art and foreign-language teaching – so that even bilingual or foreign language courses can benefit from a visit to the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
