Historical Archive

The holdings of the Historical Archive of the Hamburger Kunsthalle will be extensively revised and rearranged to better suit archival purposes. As of 2018 the holdings will again be accessible for research in an appropriate and improved form. In the meantime, we apologise for any inconveniences.

In order to reopen the Historical Archive of the Hamburger Kunsthalle and maintain accessibility for research and the public, we rely on strong partners. If you share our interest in the Historical Archive and wish to learn more about how you can support us, we would be much pleased to receive your call or e-mail to our Department Fundraising and Sponsoring.

Holdings

The Historical Archive comprises ca. 200 meters of documentary material (correspondence, plans, photographs, estates etc.). It documents the history of the Hamburger Kunsthalle and the activities of the people working in and for the museum. The correspondence and materials, preserved since the first third of the 19th century, bear witness to the beginnings of the initially founded Städtische Gemälde Galerie and the developments of Hamburger Kunsthalle, first opened in 1869, until the present day.

Here you may access the holdings of the Historical Archive.

News / Current Events / Exhibitions

Documents from the Historical Archive are frequently requested, cited in scientific publications and featured in exhibitions. For example, the holdings of the Historical Archive formed an important basis for the development and installation of the exhibition: For this exhibition, the Hamburger Kunsthalle’s holdings of artworks by Emil Nolde were examined and researched to the greatest possible extent. The current status of research was published in the exhibition catalogue in the chapter: »The Holdings of Works by Emile Nolde in the Hamburger Kunsthalle« (by Ute Haug and David Klemm, with the assistance of Sophia Colditz, Dorothee Glawe und Daniel Becker). The same procedure was adopted for works formerly held by the Hamburger Kunsthalle: »The Former Holdings of Works by Emile Nolde in the Hamburger Kunsthalle« (by Ute Haug and Dorothee Glawe).
