| “Instruction and Entertainment”. 9 February to 10 June 2007 |
|
The artist Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein (1751-1829) is known to most people for his famous portrait Goethe in der Campagna. According to the artist himself, his work is characterised by “instruction and entertainment”. Tischbein is generally regarded as representative of an epoch marked by great social and political upheavals. The exhibition presents Tischbein as an artist who questioned the classical concept of the artist by linking fine art, science and literature – introducing Tischbein the draughtsman, archaeologist and story-teller.
